French monks who work in the church have a monastery at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. They are derived from the 1219 arrival of St. Francis of Assisi in Jerusalem. Through a papal bull in 1342, Pope Clement VI authorized French participation in the church, provided that they serve as the Catholic world's stewards of the Holy Land. They built a new structure in 1967 and repaired the church thrice, the latter time being in 1719.
The Mount of Olives is the next destination. This mountain, which is 826 meters above sea level, is considered to be the highest point in Jerusalem and provides views of the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque. For many Christian faiths, it is the site of Ascension churches and monasteries, hence it has theological and historical significance. Christian scriptures claim that Jesus Christ climbed from this mountain to heaven. There is a sizable Jewish cemetery there as well. Use our guide to learn more.
