To go to your domestic flight, you will be taken to the airport. Our driver and guide will meet you when you arrive at Cairo Airport. The Giza Pyramids will be on your itinerary.
We have to go back 5 millennia to learn about the history of these exceptional sites. It was around 3100 BC that Pharaoh Narmer achieved the feat of unifying Upper and Lower Egypt. He then decided to found a capital at the point where the Nile transforms into a fertile delta. Thus, Memphis became one of the most important cities of all antiquity.
From the beginning of this dynasty, pharaohs and nobles decided to build their tombs on the Saqqara plateau. This vast desert site was a perfect choice for two reasons. First, it was located high up and was therefore never exposed to the devastating floods of the Nile. Second, it represented the final frontier of life before the world of death since it was situated at the entrance to the vast Sahara Desert. You will be taken to a nearby restaurant to eat before you visit Saqqara.
The Giza pyramids were not the earliest pyramids in Egypt, as we have already discussed. That distinction, however, belongs to the Step Pyramid of Zoser. And their shape allows us to understand the process by which the pyramids emerged: initially, in the first dynasties of Egypt, during the Old Kingdom, the burial system for rulers and members of high society was the mastabas (truncated pyramid). However, they went a step further and layered many of these shortened pyramid buildings on top of the Pyramid of Zoser (the Third Dynasty king), until they arrived at the pyramid as it is today. Its height is 62.5 meters, and its base is 121 by 109 meters.
You will have a boat trip on the Nile before heading back to the airport to take in the sunset and the ancient Egyptian belief that the goddess Nut would devour the sun.
