Surprisingly, he discovered one head emerging from the sand, its neighbor broken, and the other two, still intact, emerging from the surface.  At the start of the 20th century, other Egyptologists carried out the excavation and clearance.

Two temples in Abu Simbel have bases that are 125 meters above sea level. Under the guidance of UNESCO and with assistance from worldwide collaboration, the two temples of Abu Simbel were conserved. Several projects were proposed for their rescue. The first project was to protect the site with a huge dam, the second project was to raise the two temples using hydraulic jacks, and the third was to move the two temples, cut them into 1,305 blocks, and rebuild them 65 meters higher, out of reach of the Nile. This last project, which was a Swedish project, was selected; it was a project. Early in 1964, the rescue effort got underway, and it was finished in 1972.
