The Egyptian collections from the numerous excavation campaigns of the 19th century were first exhibited at the Boulaq Museum from 1863 to 1889, then in the former royal palace of Giza, whose first curator was the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette. It was he who decided to build, in the heart of modern Cairo, the neoclassical building in Tahrir Square, erected in 1896 by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon: it was the first true Egyptian museum in Cairo, easily recognizable by its dome. This museum, whose direction was then entrusted to the French Egyptologist Gaston Maspero, opened its doors 6 years later. On two floors, the Egyptian Museum of Cairo presents its collections in around a hundred rooms.
